Chrysler
was founded by Walter
P. Chrysler on June 6, 1925 when
the Maxwell
Motor Company (est. 1904) was re-organized into the Chrysler
Corporation.
The original 1924 Chrysler was a 6-cylinder automobile, designed
to provide customers with an advanced, well-engineered car, but at
a more affordable price. The
Chrysler included a carburetor air filter, high compression
engine, full pressure lubrication, and an oil filter, at a time
when most autos came without these features. Among
the innovations in its early years would be the first practical
mass-produced four-wheel hydraulic brakes, a system nearly completely
engineered by Chrysler with patents assigned to Lockheed, and rubber
engine mounts to reduce vibration. Chrysler also developed a road
wheel with a ridged rim, designed to keep a deflated tire from
flying off the wheel. Chrysler's decision to compete directly with
Cadillac and Lincoln contributed to the development of the Imperial
in 1926, production of which would continue until 1993. In the
1930's, Chrysler's Airflow design would debut with the slogan "The
car of tomorrow is here today." The Royal model appears in 1937
and would run until 1950. Chrysler Saratoga appears in 1939 and
would reappear intermittently until 1995. The Newport nameplate
makes it's appearance in 1940. 1955 would see the introduction
of the musclecar ancestor, the 300 series although in a much more
limited and luxurious production run. Other model nameplates include:
Avenger, Cirrus, Concorde, Conquest, Crossfire, Daytona, Fifth
Avenue, Horizon, Intrepid, Laser, Neon, New Yorker, Pacifica, PT
Cruiser, Sebring, Stratus, Town & Country, Valiant, Viper, Voyager,
and Windsor. In 2009, Chrysler filed for bankruptcy protection
and received government backed loans to reorganize its finances.
In June, 2010, Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11 protection and
announced a planned partnership with Fiat. |
