Cadillac
was founded in 1902 by Henry Leland, a master mechanic who named
the company after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, founder of Detroit
and Leland's forebear. Leland convinced backers to continue with
the car manufacturer after Henry Ford backed out of the business
venture named Henry Ford Company. Cadillac sought to distinguish
itself from the start with an emphasis on precision engineering
and luxurious finished product. Industry firsts include a fully
enclosed cab, electrical ignition and lighting systems, all steel "turret
roof" design,
shatter resistent glass, and Autronic Eye, an automatic headlight
dimmer. Development and refinement of the V-8, V-12, and V-16 engines
would help to make Cadillac "The Standard of the World".
By 1950 Cadillac produced it's one millionth car, a 1950 Cadillac
Coupe de Ville. Cadillac's first tailfins appeared in 1948, inspired
by the Lockheed P-38 fighter aircraft. The tailfins would reach
their peak in the 1959 model year and then saw a gradual reduction
in subsequent model years. The introduction of the front-wheel
drive Eldorado came about in 1967 and produced a competitor for
Lincoln and Imperial. Driver airbags were offered on some Cadillac
models as early as 1974. In 1975, Cadillac became the first U.S.
auto maker to install electronic fuel injection on their vehicles.
The Northstar engine, the first 32 valve V-8 production engine
is introduced in 1992 and 1999 would see the space age Night Vision
thermal imaging technology.
